Sandakan Airport Reaches One Million Passengers.
SANDAKAN: Sandakan Airport is here for the first time in its history, reaching a million passengers this year.
The airport registered passenger growth of almost 15 percent this year and met its target according to the statistics from Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB).
A ceremony to mark the historic event was held at the airport on Sunday.
It was attended by Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong, MAHB General Manager (Aviation Marketing) Mohamed Sallauddin Mohamed Shah, Sandakan Airport Manager Suhaimi Abdul Sani and representatives from the Municipal Council Sandakan and Sandakan Tourism Association.
Commenting on MAHB’s achievements, Vivian hopes it will mark a more positive start to the airport in the years ahead. She said, “I would like to urge MAHB to continue its efforts to bring Sandakan forward to a wider audience”.
“We are delighted that Malindo Airlines and Royal Brunei Airlines have started operations this year and look forward to seeing other airlines take the same step next year,” she said.
She also said Sandakan Airport would be upgraded once the runway project, which began work last month, would be completed.
Thus, in the second half of 2021, Sandakan Airport will have an extension of 2,500 meters, she said.
Therefore, she also urged MAHB to all relevant stakeholders in the tourism industry to work more closely now to promote Sandakan more aggressively to attract more people and more flights.
She also wanted to encourage all airline partners – AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Maswings, Malindo Airlines, and Royal Brunei – to consider expanding the network to and from Sandakan.
“I am glad we have a series of Sandakan-Taipei rental flights starting in January next year,” she said.
Sandakan airport reaches one million passengers and it will be a good start for Sandakan for the Visit Malaysia Year 2020.
