Walai Tobilung, also known as Tobilung Cultural House, was built in 2010 by the community in Kampung Minansad, Kota Marudu, Sabah. It is a monument that symbolizes the pride of Tobilung ethnicity that resides in North Borneo, Sabah. Walai Tobilung is located 5km from Langkon Township, half way through the 80km drive to Simpang Mengayau (Tip of Borneo). You could easily reach Walai Tobilung by any mode of transportation. Travelling by road will take you 2 hours from Kota Kinabalu and one and a half hour from Kundasang if you take the Marak Parak route. Here in Walai Tobilung, experience culture, nature, and heritage!
Founder of Walai Tobilung
The founder of Walai Tobilung Cultural Village is Mr. Janis Kansirong. He was born March 10, 1975 and was born in the Dusun Tobilung community. Both parents are the original Dusun Tobilung. During childhood, he was exposed to the Tobilung community and that is why he wanted to preserve the culture of the Tobilung community and establish Walai Tobilung Cultural Village to the community as well as the local and foreign communities. He is very keen and passionate to create Walai Tobilung because his background is widely exposed to the Tobilung ethnic culture. The efforts to develop Walai Tobilung Cultural Village began in 2010 where he had thought that it was necessary to put in efforts to preserve Tobilung’s culture so that it would continue to be preserved and passed on to future generations. His opinion if these efforts are not continued now, in the next ten to twenty years the Tobilung culture will disappear in the face of the earth.

Before we begin, what is “Tobilung” actually? Tobilung is a tribe that obtained their name from their tribe leader, “Aki Tombolung” who relocated from KDM’s native land in Nunuk Ragang. They have less than 20,000 estimated population left, which are concentrated mainly in part of Kota Marudu and Kota Belud district respectively.
The existence of Walai Tobilung aims to preserve the unique Tobilung culture and to provide educational information to their visitors. Besides providing a traditional accommodation, Walai Tobilung also provide programs where visitors can enjoy the scenery of the forest while enjoying the peace and serenity of Mother Nature, as well as to witness the first rays of the rising sun.

1. Cultural Gallery
This is where we exhibit the tools used by the natives in the past including their hunting tools, fishing tools, household tools, kitchen utensil, weapon etc.
2. Bridal Dais/Costume
It showcases the native decorations and motives used in the wedding ceremonies. Also, shows the garments wore by the bride and the groom. Don’t forget to take your photo with this as the background.
3. Traditional Music Tools
Visitors will be able to try and see the traditional bamboo musical instruments such as Sompoton, Suling (Traditional Flutes), and Babadon,metal instruments like Gongs, Kulintangan, and Tinukul and a wooden instrument called Sundatang. You can try playing them too.
4. Manambagas Tools
Learn about the tools used in rice milling process. At the same time you can learn about “Bambarayon” the spirit that takes care of the harvest.
5. Tobilung’s Traditional House
You can learn about the native architecture and interior design throughout the house. It is very unique with its pentagon shape inspired by the stars in the sky.
6. Traditional Mini Herbal Garden
Learn about the traditional herbs used by the natives in sumimpun (traditional foot soaking).
A wooden statue that resemble a human being. It holds historical significance to the natives and plays a part in their belief system.

Did you wonder how Tobilung people use their traditional tools to process rice? Here is the place that you can experience all of the process. You will be taught how the Manambagas process was done using traditional tools such as Norutip, Tukab-Ukab, Tosung and Raya. Doing this will take you back in time, at least as far back as the 40’s.
Have you tried foot soaking before? You will feel more freshened up when you do this with an herbal soak where the herbal mix secret was inherited from the previous ancestor. Very refreshing indeed.
Have you ever heard of this word? It is one of the native’s traditional game of tubau (wooden spinning top). The winner of this game is determined by the longest spinning tubau. Challenge your families and friends or the local communities to see how good you are!
5. Cultural Performance
Witness the beauty of Tobilung culture in their dance moves, songs and music. Also, you can take part in the traditional mock wedding held here and watch bobolian perform their rineet (spiritual ceremony) to communicate with the Creator. The traditional dance of the Dusun Tobilung is called Mongigol Tobilung danced by the original Tobilung community. You can hear the sound of a relaxing traditional music rhythm from Kulintangan and Gong. You can also hear the rhythm of Sundatang musical instrument being played. It is shaped like guitar and Sape.

This traditional food is the most exciting activity because you have the opportunity to learn how to cook like Tobilung and learn the ingredients used to cook their traditional cuisine.
